Plein Air in Green Lake Park

Green Lake Park has much to offer for the plein air artist.

A favorite of many in the Seattle area, Green Lake Park has much to offer for the plein air artist. The path around the lake is about 3 miles and filled with great views of urban nature! I find the variety of trees fascinating and viewing the different shapes of trees from across the lake offers students practice simplifying trees into larger forms rather than getting stuck painting leaves and branches! One of my favorite subjects is Duck Island, an artificial island originally built as a wildlife sanctuary and was home to swans gifted to the city of Seattle from Vancouver, B.C. back in the 1930s.

I like to arrive early and cycle a few laps around the lake before my class arrives – though it has to be a fairly leisurely ride due to the number of pedestrians using the trail!
